General wireless and Wireless N
technology
Acronyms
What do we mean by "wireless"?
This particular wireless technology (also referred to as " Wi-Fi ") allows
radio communication between computers so they form a network. With the addition
of a router, all can share a broadband Internet connection.
In MIMO, if the more the better,
why not use more than 3
antennae?
A 3x3 antenna design currently represents the best cost/performance ratio.
Past that value of 3, the soaring cost involved does not justify the small
increase in performance. As costs gradually go down, it will be more viable to
include more antennas.
What about security?
Wireless communications take place over the air, so anyone with a proper
receiver can listen in, making this medium very unsecure. This is why encryption
is important: it will prevent outsiders from tapping into your broadband
connection without your knowledge and, furthermore, will protect your data from
being stolen.
Should I worry about the
radiations?
Scientific research has only recently begun in this area, so there is no
definite answer yet. However, one study conducted between 2003-2005 about mobile
phones concluded that "No evidence was found to indicate that people with
self-reported sensitivity to mobile phone signals are able to detect such
signals " (British Medical Journal, March 2006). Since Wi-Fi equipment emits
less intense radiation than do mobile phones, this supports the argument that
wi-fi radiations are in fact harmless.
Should I worry about the draft
status of the standard?
"Draft" means that some details have not been finalised, and are still in
discussion. This is a normal process that takes a long time to complete. Final
completion of the standard is expected in early 2008. However, we know since
version 2 of the draft that all products will be software-upgradable.
What about compatibility issues
between manufacturers?
D-Link uses chipsets from three major providers in its range, ensuring the
best level of compatibility compared with competitors.
Can I use Wireless N in my
business?
Of course! With QoS and sophisticated wireless encryption, you get many
business-class features. Only the missing official Wi-Fi stamp prevents us from
marketing this range at business users.
What does a router do?
A router is the device that allows you to share your broadband connection
between several computers.
What is an Access Point (AP)?
An Access Point is used for wireless connections, linking devices together
wirelessly.
What does MIMO stand for?
Multiple In, Multiple Out refers to the use of multiple antennae at both the
transmitter and receiver sides, in order to increase throughput and signal
reliability. It is the cornerstone of 802.11n technology.
What is ADSL?
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line: a broadband technology that uses the
traditional telephone lines for transporting data.
What is QoS?
Quality of Service: a mechanism that gives priority to delay-sensitive data,
eg gaming will be given priority over e-mail, to eradicate lagging. With
StreamEngine, the process is automatic.
What is WISH?
Wireless Intelligent Stream Handling: the wireless version of our
StreamEngine. With StreamEngine, data going to and from the Internet is assigned
priorities automatically, according to how sensitive it is to delay. With WISH,
the same process is applied on data moving to and from the wireless network.
What is WPS?
Wi-Fi Protected Setup: the Wi-Fi Alliance's standard for wireless security
at the touch of a button. With WPS, the wireless network name (SSID) and
encryption keys are automatically generated and broadcast to the client devices.
Users do not have to memorise complicated passwords and key them in several
times. This considerably simplifies the process of setting up security on the
wireless network.
What is DCC?
D-Link Click'n Connect: a software that runs directly from the product CD
and in a few simple steps helps install and configure your device, with no
technical knowledge required. With our bundle kits, the wizard even tells you
when to insert your adapter!
